In an era of hyper-acceleration, where fashion trends dissolve as quickly as they materialise, true luxury stands quietly apart. It is not shouted; it is felt. It is the subtle weight of a perfectly balanced heel, the flawless alignment of a stitched seam, and the way a piece of leather contours to the foot over time, memorising its owner’s gait.
At Hugs & Co., this devotion to quiet luxury has a definitive home: Portugal. Specifically, the historic shoemaking regions surrounding Porto, where centuries of heritage meet a contemporary obsession with perfection. For the discerning modern wardrobe, a shoe is not merely an accessory; it is an architectural feat.
To understand why Portuguese craftsmanship is globally revered, one must dissect the shoe itself. At Hugs & Co., this exploration centres on two masterclasses in footwear architecture: the fluid, glove-like ease of Moccasin construction and the formidable, timeless endurance of the Goodyear Welt.
To understand a Hugs & Co. shoe, one must first understand the ateliers of Portugal. Unlike mass-manufactured footwear that relies on highly automated, soul-less assembly lines, Portuguese shoemaking remains an inherently human art form.
What sets Portuguese artisans apart is their generational intuition. These are family-run workshops where the behaviour of leather is understood like a native language. Artisans can feel a microscopic flaw in a hide simply by running a thumb across it; they know exactly how much tension to apply when lasting a shoe by hand to ensure it retains its shape for decades, not just seasons.
Portugal has quietly become the epicentre of luxury footwear production because it refuses to compromise on the human element. Yet, this respect for tradition is balanced by a forward-thinking commitment to ethical production and premium material sourcing. When you slip into a pair of Hugs & Co. shoes, you are stepping into a legacy of pride, patience, and unparalleled skill.

For Hugs & Co., the driving philosophy has always been to marry British sartorial elegance with effortless, everyday wearability. Nowhere is this marriage more evident than in our signature moccasins and driving shoes.
Traditional moccasin construction is one of the oldest and most comfortable shoemaking techniques known to humankind, yet it requires immense skill to execute at a luxury level. In standard shoe construction, the upper sits on top of a rigid insole. In a Hugs & Co. moccasin, the construction is inverted: a single, continuous piece of premium suede or leather wraps completely around the underside of the foot, forming both the sole and the sides of the shoe.
“It is the footwear equivalent of a bespoke suit—it does not force the body into a shape; it molds entirely to the body.” Benjie Davis, Hugs & Co. Founder
Once the leather is wrapped around the last (the anatomical wooden or plastic foot mold), the top panel—or the "apron"—is stitched to the body of the shoe. In our Portuguese ateliers, this is a sacred process. The stitching is done entirely by hand using a twin-needle technique. The artisan must maintain perfectly consistent tension with every single stitch. If it is too loose, the shoe loses its structure; too tight, and the leather puckers.
While traditional driving shoes are notoriously fragile—destined for short walks from the villa to the sports car—Hugs & Co. has revolutionised this silhouette. Our Portuguese craftsmen expertly integrate our pioneering upcycled tire soles into the moccasin construction.
This requires precise alignment, ensuring the durable, eco-conscious rubber tread provides maximum grip and longevity without compromising the flexible, lightweight essence of the moccasin. The result is a shoe that offers the cloud-like comfort of a slipper but possesses the stamina for city pavements.
If the moccasin represents the art of flexibility, the Goodyear welted shoe represents the pinnacle of footwear engineering. Reserved for our most formal and robust silhouettes—from refined Chelsea boots to timeless Oxfords—Goodyear welting is widely considered the gold standard of luxury shoemaking.

A Goodyear welted shoe is built to last a lifetime. The magic lies in the "welt"—a narrow strip of high-grade leather that is stitched around the perimeter of the shoe’s upper and insole.
The First Stitch: The upper and the insole are stitched directly to this leather welt.
The Cavity: This creates a small void between the insole and the outer sole. Our Portuguese artisans fill this cavity with a natural cork paste. Over weeks of wear, this cork layer compresses and custom-molds to the unique contours of your foot, creating a bespoke footbed.
The Lockstitch: Finally, the outer sole is stitched directly to the welt itself.
Because the upper is never directly attached to the outer sole, the shoe can be repeatedly disassembled and resoled by a cobbler without damaging the upper.
While Goodyear welting originated in the industrial revolution, Portuguese craftsmanship has elevated it into an art form. The process requires over 200 distinct operations.
In our ateliers, the channeling of the leather sole, the stitching of the welt, and the final edge-dressing are executed with mathematical precision. The stitching must be perfectly straight, and the edges must be trimmed and polished to a flawless finish. The result is a beautifully robust shoe that repels water, provides exceptional structural support, and promises to age magnificently.

Of course, even the most skilled artisan cannot create luxury out of mediocre materials. The true anatomy of a Hugs & Co. shoe begins long before the first incision is made on the cutting table.
We source only the finest European skins—from buttery-soft Italian suedes to rich, full-grain English calf leathers. When these premium hides arrive in our Portuguese ateliers, they are meticulously inspected. Our artisans look for natural grain consistency, suppleness, and strength.
By pairing these elite materials with Portuguese tanning and construction expertise, Hugs & Co. shoes develop a stunning patina over time. They do not wear out; they wear in, gaining character and stories with every mile traveled.
To truly appreciate the curation of a Hugs & Co. collection, one must appreciate how these two construction methods serve different facets of the modern lifestyle.

In the world of luxury fashion, the word "quality" is thrown around with casual abandon. But true quality cannot be faked, and it cannot be rushed. It is found in the hidden details: the neatness of a hand-sewn moccasin, the rich scent of vegetable-tanned leather, and the hidden layer of cork beneath a Goodyear welted insole.
By anchoring our production in Portugal, Hugs & Co. ensures that every pair of shoes tells a story of human mastery. We do not design footwear to be discarded at the end of a season. Whether you are slip-sliding into the relaxed, revolutionary comfort of our tire-soled moccasins or stepping firmly into the structured elegance of our Goodyear welted boots, you are investing in an authentic piece of wearable art.
That is the anatomy of a luxury shoe. That is the Hugs & Co. difference.
